Having a skilled employee who can do the job right the first time is of excellent value. However, many times employees do not receive proper training from the get-go, leaving the door open for many problems. Training gets pushed to the side due to lack of time and lack of money. Consider these tips on how to train an employee on a budget.

1)  Pull out those old manuals, and tap into any training offered by manufacturers. Oftentimes with the purchase of new equipment you can receive free training. If you already tossed the guide that came with your software, look online to see what resources are available.
2)  Tap into all additional resources, including customers and suppliers. If you know of a customer that has a training program in place, see if you can work something out in regards to training your employees.
3)  Team up with other local businesses and learn together. Try to do an interchange, perhaps helping them in an area where you are comfortable in exchange for help in another aspect of business.
4)  Consider sending one employee for additional training. Seminars, courses, and classes are a great tool for advancing your business. While it may not be possible to send all your employees, you can probably send one. Then, when they return, set up a time for them to train the rest of the employees on what they have learned.

5)  Encourage your entire team to take advantage of training programs offered at local universities or trade schools. Education is a great stimulus for your business and the more your employees know the more they can contribute to the success of the company.

6)  Have a “Tutorial Friday” every Friday afternoon. Choose someone on the team to teach others something they have just learned that will improve customer satisfaction. Rotate each week to a different employee.

Training takes time and money, but it is worth the effort. Having skilled employees you can trust not only makes your business better, it makes you life less stressful as well.
