Finding an Attorney for your Small Sign Business

An attorney may be best to review complicated legal documents.

Choosing an attorney for your sign making business can be much like finding a marriage mate. You have to be clear when you communicate your personal needs, feel comfortable with the relationship, and have a certain sort of chemistry.

Whether or not you have found the “right one” depends on what you, and what he or she, puts out on the table.  You can use the following questions to find out if he or she is the right attorney for you.

  1. Are you licensed to practice in my State? In the day and age of using the internet, it is possible you will stumble across an attorney that lives across state lines. Attorneys are licensed on a state-by-state basis, so if he lives across state lines, he most likely won’t be a good, ethical fit for you.
  2. What’s your background and what experience do you have with needs like mine? Let’s face it, an attorney is a potentially major investment. Before you jump in to anything, find out what experience your attorney has, particularly in the areas in which you need assistance.
  3. How do you charge? Traditionally lawyers charge by the hour, but more and more lawyers are starting to charge based on the job or using a monthly retainer. Don’t hesitate to broach the topic, and get an estimate of what handling your situation will cost.
  4. Who will actually be doing the work? You may love this guy, but in actuality he will be passing along your case to someone else at the firm. Don’t fall for the bait and switch; ask who is going to be handling your case up front.
  5. Do we have chemistry? Probably best to not actually voice this question, but rather keep it to yourself. Don’t think that makes it any less important; small businesses depend on solid professional relationships for survival. You need an attorney who can provide your small business with the care and attention it needs.
